Two young women I knew from Long Island were tragically lost in a DWI accident along with another of their friends, a huge loss for Massapequa, their families, freinds, local soccer, etc. In the wake of this horrific loss, the scholarship was generously established. This lucky and well deserving young woman, Stephanie Radakovic has been awarded this year is out of the Smithtown Hotspur of LIJSL, they took a State Open Cup title in 2016. This young women is now recovering from a car accident of her own in which she broke her ankle in 2 places.

Roby Young, a top international player captaining Israel in the late 60's, trememdous club player, named player of the millennium for his club team of Hapoel Haifa, Soccer Bowl winner with the New York Cosmos, decades at the Buckley School and he had coached both the men and women at Queens College. Roby is not just one of the best soccer people I know, he is one of the best people I have met, having known him since 1982 and accompanied him as he took his middle son, Irad and his youth team to the FIFA World Cup in Mexico in 1986.
readThis innovative idea first trotted out last year has local higher level teams hositng open training session by the local colleges to attend. The St. John's University Women's Soccer program was the local one I went to and it as well attended. It afforded the local coaches the rare opportunity to see a college training session up close and personal, while interacting with the staff and student athletes. Head Coach Ian Stone and his staff were well prepared and the session moved along seemlessly, culminating with a question and answer session to highlight the day.
readUnited Soccer Coaches via the votes of NCAA coaches have awarded the National Player of the Year awards, a 10 pound crystal ball awarded since 1967. Jon Bakero became the second straight player from Wake Forest to win the award, following fellow Deamon Dacon and current member of the DC United Ian Harkes. On the women's side of the ball, National Champions Standford had their midfielder, Andi Sullivan get the nod.

This is the top prize, Player of the Year in Collegiate Soccer and will be awarded Jan. 5 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St Louis. For the men, Wake Forest Fwd, Sr. John Bakero, out of Standford Def. Sr. Tomas Hillard-Arce finally Indiana University Def. Sr. Grant Hillard. The womens list is equally impressive with UCLA Mid. Soph. Jesse Fleming, along with Univ. of S. Carolina Fwd. Sr. Savannah McCaskill followed by Standford Fwd Sr. Andi Sullivan.
