This innovative idea first trotted out last year has local higher level teams hositng open training session by the local colleges to attend. The St. John's University Women's Soccer program was the local one I went to and it as well attended. It afforded the local coaches the rare opportunity to see a college training session up close and personal, while interacting with the staff and student athletes. Head Coach Ian Stone and his staff were well prepared and the session moved along seemlessly, culminating with a question and answer session to highlight the day.

United Soccer Coaches via the votes of NCAA coaches have awarded the National Player of the Year awards, a 10 pound crystal ball awarded since 1967. Jon Bakero became the second straight player from Wake Forest to win the award, following fellow Deamon Dacon and current member of the DC United Ian Harkes. On the women's side of the ball, National Champions Standford had their midfielder, Andi Sullivan get the nod.

This is the top prize, Player of the Year in Collegiate Soccer and will be awarded Jan. 5 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St Louis. For the men, Wake Forest Fwd, Sr. John Bakero, out of Standford Def. Sr. Tomas Hillard-Arce finally Indiana University Def. Sr. Grant Hillard. The womens list is equally impressive with UCLA Mid. Soph. Jesse Fleming, along with Univ. of S. Carolina Fwd. Sr. Savannah McCaskill followed by Standford Fwd Sr. Andi Sullivan.
