Pumas Prevails In PKs Over NYCFC

 

Despite a weather delay of almost three hours and making its first appearance in New York City, Pumas UNAM prevailed 3:2 on penalty kicks after a 1:1 draw with hosts NYCFC (New York City FC) in opening round of Leagues Cup, tournament involving teams from MLS vs. Liga MX, on Saturday at Bronx’s Yankee Stadium.

 

Naeher, Needed, Not in Next Game

Yes, the USWNT is still in the Olympics, they will play next in the Bronze Medal game taking on the Matildas. She injured her right knee in suffering a hyperextension of it and a bone contusion upon landing as she went for the ball. She held strong for some 8 minutes, but on a goal kick it was just too much.

Come Aug. 5, she will not dress, her MRI, thank goodness indicated zero soft tissue damage, she is expected to be out for many weeks.

Yes, just the 2nd game in on this Olympiad, it may very well have been a must win game, unfamiliar territory for the reigning World Cup winners. Their last time out was not so good, this was a far weaker opponent so it is a better outcome but does not mean in one way or the other that the woes exposed in the game with Sweden have been solved. Gone were so many high crossing balls from the wing, present was much better movement of the ball, well taken shots, far more time on the ball and more. Thought to come out angry, the team seemed very controlled.

Now the USWNT are aware of how the rest of the world feels in playing them. Start to finish domination, more energy, better support, passing and more spelt the end to a 43 game winning steak. Yes, forever the games with Sweden have been tight, but the US just were hardly in form. The press of Sweden did not stop and they were unable to break it. Passes just off, players not opening up, the inability to get together on most crossing balls into the area, but keep trying for an hour and a half?, take a player on, play it in on the ground something. Predictable to a fault, to a loss.
