U.S. U-17 WOMEN’S YOUTH NATIONAL TEAM ADVANCES TO ROUND OF 16 IN WORLD CUP QUALIFYING WITH 13-0 WIN AGAINST PUERTO RICO Record-Tying Five Goal Performance from Amalia Villarreal and Hat Trick from Claire Hutton Lead USA to Second-Straight Double-Digit Win; U-17s Conclude the Group Stage Against Costa Rica on April 27 (4 p.m. ET on FS2 and ViX) SAN CRISTÓBAL, Dominican Republic (April 25, 2022) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s Youth National Team secured its place in the Round of 16 at the Concacaf Women’s U-17 Championship after rolling past Puerto Rico 13-0. Five goals from forward Amalia Villarreal and a hat trick from midfielder Claire Hutton led the U.S. attack as the team scored five goals in the first half and eight in the second to tie a U.S. record for fourth-most goals ever scored in a youth World Cup qualifying match. Villarreal’s five goals tied a USA record for most goals scored in a single match at any age level and included a true hat trick inside of six minutes as she found the net three times from 57th through the 62nd minutes. With the top three teams in each of the four groups advancing to the Round of 16, the USA has secured its place in knockout stage with one group game left to play, that coming against Costa Rica on April 27 (4 p.m. ET on FS2 and ViX) at Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo. U.S. head coach Natalia Astrain made nine changes to the starting lineup that featured against Grenada in the first match of the tournament on April 23 and the U.S. attack didn’t skip a beat. The young Americans wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as midfielder Lauren Martinho tallied in the sixth minute. Villarreal then began what would be a memorable afternoon in the 11th minute with a powerful right footed strike across her body from seven yards out. The Americans tripled their lead with a goal from winger Taylor Suarez in the 21st minute before Hutton added her name to the score sheet in the 34th. Villarreal then closed the half with her second goal of the night, firing a brilliant curling shot from the edge of the box to freeze the goalkeeper on her line. After opening the second half scoring in the 51st minute via Hutton, the USA scored six goals in the next 13 minutes which included Villarreal’s three-goal rampage in the span of six minutes to complete her five-goal tally. Hutton followed up that achievement as she completed her hat trick in the 65th. Two minutes later, Suarez scored her second of the night -- adding to her pair of assists -- after skillfully turning her defender near the left corner of the box and beating the goalkeeper from distance with a powerful strike. After coming into the match as a substitute, Nicollette Kiorpes scored her second goal of the tournament in the 70th minute before defender Nicola Fraser, daughter of former U.S. international and Colorado Rapids head coach Robin Fraser, put the finishing touches on the match in the 84th, pouncing on a poor clearance following a corner kick and burying a hard shot from four yards out. She took a touch and fired a left-footed shot toward the right side-netting to open the scoring from 12 yards out. USA 1, PUR 0 USA – Amalia Villarreal (Claire Hutton), 11th minute – Dribbling up the field, Hutton played a through-ball to Villarreal into the right side of the penalty box. Villarreal’s angle was tight, but she unleashed a powerful right-footed shot across her body to find the back of the net from seven yards out. USA 2, PUR 0 USA – Taylor Suarez, 21st minute – Amalia Villarreal got on the end of a cross and bounced a header on frame as she collided with a defender. The shot was knocked out by the goalkeeper, but Suarez pounced on the rebound and, on a difficult chance, buried a slick full volley into the open net from eight yards out. USA 3, PUR 0 USA – Claire Hutton (Taylor Suarez), 34th minute – Following a short corner from the right, Suarez played a precise cross from just inside the corner of the box which Hutton met in the air with a header to beat the goalkeeper from seven yards out into the lower left corner. USA 4, PUR 0 USA – Amalia Villarreal (Riley Jackson), 39th minute – Jackson found Villarreal with a pass at the top of the box and slightly to the left. Villarreal took a touch to the inside and placed a powerful curler in the upper right corner for her second goal of the night. USA 5, PUR 0 USA – Claire Hutton (Amalia Villarreal), 51st minute – Following a dangerous cross into the box, Villarreal collected the ball near the goal line after battling with a defender and played it back toward the heart of the box for Hutton, who finished from just behind the penalty spot. USA 6, PUR 0 USA – Amalia Villarreal (Lauren Martinho), 57th minute – After getting on the end of a long ball into the box, Martinho and Villarreal ran in on goal together. Martinho’s attempted shot was blocked by the ‘keeper but Villarreal finished the rebound on her first touch from about six yards out. USA 7, PUR 0 USA – Amalia Villarreal (Claire Hutton), 60th minute – Hutton forced a turnover near midfield and played Villarreal with a through-ball. She took a touch to round the goalkeeper to the inside, and then another to beat a defender before slotting the ball into the open net from about eight yards out. USA 8, PUR 0 USA – Amalia Villarreal (Alyssa Gonzales), 61st minute – Gonzalez, a center back, played a left-footed ball into the box to find Villarreal behind the defense. She brought the ball down with her first touch and buried a right-footed half-volley from the penalty spot for her fifth goal.
