US over Thailand by a Record Bakers Dozen

By Sean McCaffery, June 11, 2019

In American football they won with a pair of td's and a missed extra point but in futbol it was a systematic taking apart of an overmatched team. One record set, another equaled as Alex Morgan tied the GOAT, Michelle Akers with 5 goals in a game. The 15,591 who witnessed this fireworks show had to have left impressed, despite the fact it was Thailand the US beat, there was one little girl the cameras kept going to who was crying, so not all left happy. Another record tied was that the USA had 7 players score, equalling that mark set by Germany. A pair of braces by Rose Lavelle and Samantha Mewis achived a new mark with a trio having a multiple goal game. As mentioned and I have said it myself, the US squad could be split in 2 and still be top teams due to the unprecedented depth of squad. First time World Cup players Lavelle, Mewis, Lindsey Horan & Mallory Pugh all got goals in their debuts, quite outstanding. From minutes 50-56 the US struck 4 times, the fastest in Cup history.

Next up Sunday at noon is Chile, a much stronger side than Thailand, who lost to Sweden 2-0, join us at Soccer Post LI, the sister stores of Upper 90 will also show the game.

Kwik Kixx:

-The previous largest margin of victory for the USWNT was a 7-0 win over Chinese Taipei in 1991, the first tourney.

-With Mallory Pugh, the US now has 32 goal scorers in the World Cup, just behind Germany with 34.

-Now in 3rd for US with World Cup goals Alex Morgan has 5, leaving her total at 8 with Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, and Carli Lloyd for 3rd. They trail only Abby Wambach with 14 & Akers and her 12.

-Lloyd now has goals in 5 straight matches tying German Brigit Prinz.

-Morgan is  now in rare air as her hat trick has her joining only Lloyd, Carin Jennings-Gabarra & Akers as those on the USWNT to have a hat trick in the Cup.

-Morgan & Akers, both with 5 goals are the only ones to have more than a hat trick in the Cup.

- Morgan is first with 5 goals and and 3 assists, the 4th in WWC history with over 3 goals and an assist.

-The three assists by Morgan are the most since 2007.

-Kelly O'Hara assisted on the first goal by Morgan, her first assist of '19 and 16 overall internationally.

-Lavelle is now the 3rd youngest to score a brace in the Cup for the US behind Cat Whitehill and Kristine Lilly.

-Lindsey now has 9 goals for the USWNT.

-Mewis now has 16 goals for the team.

- Pugh now has 17 international goals and is the 3rd youngest to score for the US side.

-7 cut their teeth in the World Cup today, Naeher, Dahlkemper, Dunn (of LI), Horan, Lavelle, & Pugh.

Was the goal total a bit excessive, yes it but it may have to be should there be a tie breaker of goal differential. It further lays down the challange for Sweden to match the total when they meet up with Thailand a tall order to fill.
