Young Clarets beaten at Turf Moor

Burnley U21s were beaten 2-1 by Leeds United on their return to Turf Moor on Friday night, with the visitors scoring either side of Murray Campbell’s first half header.

There were seven changes to the side that beat Liverpool earlier this week, with Lewis Forshaw keeping goal for the first time this season.

A new-look defence featured the returning Hamzat Balogun and Oli Pimlott as the wing-backs, with Jesse Williams stepping into one of the central roles.

Further forwards, Marley Leuluai and Ellis Clark filled central roles behind Kamarni Ryan, who led the line alongside Kian McMahon-Brown.

Ryan had the first chance of the match after just five minutes, but Leeds ‘keeper Rory Mahady produced a point-blank save to keep the striker’s header out.

At the other end, good work from Harry Gray saw him tee up Oliver Pickles, but Balogun produced a strong block.

Leeds weren’t to be denied just before the half hour mark and Gray was involved again. The England youth international crossed for Louie Dudley, whose six-yard header had too much pace for Forshaw.

Ryan had another effort saved one-on-one before the Clarets equalised on the stroke of half-time.

Clark, who was making his Turf Moor debut, whipped a free-kick in from the left and fellow Scot Campbell glanced his header into the bottom right corner.

The Clarets came out quickly after the break, with Ryan smacking the bar on the turn after good pressing to win back possession.

Manager Andy Farrell turned to his bench for the fist time on the hour, replacing Balogun with second-year scholar Albert Blackie.

The visitors regained the lead soon afterwards, though, when Gray produced a neat back heel running away from goal in the area.

Burnley upped the ante from that point and Blackie had a shot that looked destined for the back of the net but for Pickles’ timely intervention.

More switches saw Ryan and Leuluai make way for Brandon Pouani and Charlie Veevers respectively, but the changes were unable to stem the Leeds tide.

Forshaw had to produce a smart save low to his right to deny Pickles, and Connor Douglas later pulled a presentable chance wide of the left hand post.

Burnley hung in there though and Clark’s stoppage-time strike looked like it might threaten the Leeds goal, but it was too high and the visitors returned to Yorkshire with all three points.
