Timbers Withdraw Protest

By Sean McCaffery, July 21, 2018

Yesterday, the Portland Timbers let the U.S. Open Cup Commissioner know they have halted their protest from the LAFC game. The protest was over the number of foreign players deployed by the home team Wed. eve during their quaterfinal matchup.

U.S. Soccer put out this statement. "After a thorough review of the Portland Timbers' official protest, it has been determined that thte inclusion of additional foreign players was a result of a good faith misunderstanding among U.S. Soccer, Major League Soccer and Los Angeles Football Club. Each organization involved has agreed to determine an imporved process to ensure this will not happen again. In recognition of this fact, the Timbers have gracefully withdrawn their protest."

This is a decades old Cup and the rules are set well in advance, if it is only misunderstood  in this instance, then there is something else going on here. Please check back here as we do some more digging to see what may have really transpired.
