Ronald runs off to Cincy

By Sean McCaffery, December 29, 2020

Yes, Ronald Matarrita has left, NYCFC will gain at most $600,000 in GAM for him, sold on the cheap if you ask me. He was quite the dynamic back line player for the MLS club in NYC, an international player, so some cache has also gone off to the mid west.

He came to NYCFC in advance of the 2016 season from LD Alajuelense, getting 114 games with a quartet of goals and a bakers dozen of assists in this half decade of service with NY. The player for the Ticos at the international level was the team Defensive Player of the Year back in '16, the sole player to appear in the playoffs each year the team qualified, they have done rather poorly in the 2nd season.

David Lee NYCFC Sporting Dir. stated "Mata has been one of our core players since he arrived 5 years ago and crossed the 100-game mark for us earlier this year. He has contributed many fantastic performances and has been an important player. both on the pitch and in the locker room. Mata was entering the last year of his contract and the offer we received from FC Cincinnati was a significant one that continues to position us in the best possible shape heading into 2021"

Ronald informed "Coming to New York and playing here has been one of the best moments of my career. It has been a special experience spending 5 seasons with a new Club and growing up with it. To the fans, I send nothing but thanks to you  all. You're a special part of NYCFC & I will miss you in the next step of my career."

NYCFC is assured of half a million in GAM, $250,000 in 2021 & 2022, along with another $100,000 should he meet particular thresholds on the field.
