Julian Hall and Emil Forsberg Lead New York Past Pittsburgh Riverhounds in Round of 32 of U.S. Open Cup

  • Forward Julian Hall scored his second brace of the season across all competitions and now has scored seven goals across all competitions for New York this season.

 On Julian Hall…

Yeah, Julian is making big progress. He’s been a really, really important player for us. Many of you guys have heard me say it: It's not just the goals, his ability to lead our press, to set the tone for everybody in terms of how aggressive we can be to step up and go after the other team. The chasing and the strength thing that he does to make the game really, really difficult on the other team, he chases midfielders from behind. Those things go unnoticed. Obviously the part then for attacking players is they want to reward themselves with goals and Julian has done a really good job of understanding how how we want to play, the different ways that we want to be able to create chances, the different ways that we're asking him to be able to move in and around the box so that he can score goals for himself and also set up goals for others. So he's going in a really good way.

On facing NYCFC in Round 16 of the U.S. Open Cup…

We are really excited. Obviously, I've watched the New York Derby from afar. I was at the game here last season and so I think it speaks for itself in terms of the two clubs and everything that it means when two teams in the same city now play and are ready to go after each other. So, yeah, we already mentioned it a lot before, but we're really excited. Obviously, there's important games and there's work to do between now and then. But for sure, when that game comes around, we will be ready, and we're going to be really excited.

On his mindset and impact...

Of course I want to score goals, but my main objective is to make as much of an impact as I can. Thankfully, I got two tonight, and now I’m just ready for the game on Saturday.

On his development this season...

I give a lot of credit to Michael and the coaching staff for helping me throughout preseason, the start of the season, and even up until now. Of course there are a lot of things to work on, but I’m looking forward to keep progressing and getting better.

Red Bull New York Midfielder Gustav Berggren

On playing out of position…

It’s a big difference from playing in the midfield. I need to learn and adapt, and I hope I’ll get better game by game. I’m a team player. I need to help the team. If I can help the team now by playing central defender, I will do that. No matter where you put me, I will do my best to try to help the team.

On the win building confidence ahead of Montréal...

It’s always important to win and get a good feeling, and today was a good night. We just keep adding to that, and hopefully it gives us more comfort and confidence on Saturday.

On match...

Well, I’m very, very happy. Very happy—first and foremost—because of the team's performance. Honestly, in my view, it was excellent from start to finish. The truth is that we were able to execute exactly what we planned and practiced in training; for me, that collective effort from the group is always the most important thing. And well, yes, I recorded my first assist today. I’m very happy about that—to be able to help the team. Whether through goals, assists, or pressing, I just want to give my absolute best in every match. I’m very pleased about that.

On Emil Forsberg…

Well, he played in a similar position as me, so I'm happy to play with him. He's a really, really tough player, you know, his career. So I'm happy to play with him. And I learned too much about him, how we play, how he moves on the pitch. So I'm happy to play with him.
