Red Bulls Clinch Hard-Fought 1-0 Victory Over Miami at DRV PNK Stadium - May 31, 2023
In a captivating midweek clash, the New York Red Bulls secured a crucial 1-0 victory away at Inter Miami CF in their first meeting of the season. Fans were on the edge of their seats as Tom Barlow placed a perfectly timed goal following a driving run by Luquinhas.
The Brazilian left the Miami defenders in his wake as he embarked on a dribble and paved the way for Barlow to collect a rebound off the post and place the ball into an empty net. The only goal of the match, in enemy territory, was a welcomed return of the 26-year-old Brazilian from injury.
Speaking about his team's performance, Head Coach Troy Lesesne expressed pride in his players' efforts, emphasizing their dedication on the pitch. "You see the way the guys are fighting, especially in the last 10 minutes, just to see out the game. And I think suffer is the right word. We were ready to suffer in every single position for every single minute this game in order to get the three points, and we did that," Lesesne remarked.
The defensive strength of the Red Bulls was highlighted by goalkeeper Carlos Coronel, who played a key role in preserving the clean sheet, with a crucial penalty save showcasing his composure under pressure. With this performance, Coronel not only secured another clean sheet, but also tied with Red Bulls veteran Tony Meola for the most clean sheets in the club's history. His dominance against Inter Miami has been evident, recording three shutouts in four career appearances against The Herons, and maintaining a perfect win record in those matches.
The game also marked the return of several key Red Bulls. Frankie Amaya, Kyle Duncan, and Lewis Morgan all returned to play after recovering from injuries. Lewis Morgan shared his delight at being back on the pitch and praised the collective effort of the team. "Just about the effort these guys put in every single day to get our first away win of the year is a testament to the guys that started the game. The guys that came on and the guys that then get minutes here in Miami. So, a brilliant way to end the week," Morgan expressed.
Defensively, the Red Bulls continue to showcase their prowess, having allowed only 13 goals in 16 games this season. This defensive strength has propelled them to a tie for the fourth lowest goals conceded in MLS.
With another victory under their belt, the Red Bulls now turn their attention to a much-anticipated fixture at Red Bull Arena. They are set to face Orlando City SC for Fireworks Night, a meeting that promises to be a treat for fans. Lewis Morgan emphasized the significance of playing for their home fans, "All games at Red Bull Arena are obviously what we look forward to most, playing in front of our own fans."
