Points shared in goalless clash with Pompey

The Clarets extended their unbeaten run to 18 matches on Saturday afternoon, as Scott Parker's side drew 0-0 with Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Both teams had chances to win the game in a tight contest, but neither side could break the deadlock, in what saw a 21st clean sheet of the campaign secured.

Scott Parker named two changes to his XI from Monday night, with Lucas Pires and Jeremy Sarmiento coming into the side for Bashir Humphreys and Josh Brownhill.

Burnley’s first effort on target came with just five minutes played, as Zian Flemming saw his direct free-kick from 30-yards out caught by Nicolas Schmid.

After a spell of pressure from the hosts, the Clarets then came close through Lyle Foster’s header which was denied on the line, before Jaidon Anthony then saw his curled strike tipped just over the crossbar by Schmid.

The visitors had another chance moments later, when Foster broke down the left and teed up Anthony inside the box, but Schmid was forced into action once again to gather his tame effort.

Despite Parker’s side looking the closest to breaking the deadlock, Pompey responded to those earlier chances with one of their own, as Matt Ritchie saw his back-post header denied by James Trafford.

Josh Murphy then fired just wide of the target from outside the area after intercepting Pires’ cross-field pass.

With neither team able to find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes, the two sides went into the break goalless.

Burnley’s first opportunity of the second-half fell to Flemming, but the forward could only fire straight at Schmid.

As the hour mark approached, Parker made his first change of the afternoon with Hannibal replacing Sarmiento.

There was a strong appeal for a Burnley penalty with just over 10 minutes left on the clock when Pires' fierce strike heading towards the back of the net was handled just in front of the line, but referee David Webb waved away the appeals.

Trafford was then called into action with five minutes left, as the ball was cutback to Colby Bishop from a few yards out, but the Burnley No.1 was there to deny the striker from smashing it home from close range with a fantastic stop.
