Players to watch:

Orlando midfielder Gunnhildur Jónsdóttir scored her second goal of the Challenge Cup in her side’s 1-1 draw to close the group stage against Gotham FC. Orlando’s Darian Jenkins and her two goals against North Carolina are the only other goals Orlando scored in the Challenge Cup, though Jenkins was a main fixture of their forward play throughout.

Gotham midfielder Kristie Mewis has chipped in two goals of her own for the visitors, both of which came from the penalty spot against Orlando and Washington respectively. Prior to this year, only one of Mewis’ 28 career goals in NWSL competitions had come through a penalty kick. Outside of Mewis, both forwards Margaret Purce and Ifeoma Onumonu and midfielder Nahomi Kawasumi have each contributed a goal as well.

Match facts: Orlando and Gotham meet for the second consecutive week as they played to a 1-1 draw in each team’s 2022 Challenge Cup finale. The Pride enter having won just one of their last seven meetings in all competitions with Gotham (D3 L3), with Gotham taking two positive results in their tournament fixtures against Orlando (1W, 1D).

Orlando is looking to create a little momentum after finishing as the only team in the Challenge Cup to have not won a single group stage game. The Pride managed good draws against the Spirit (0-0) and Gotham to close out (1-1), but it took Orlando to its fourth game to find a goal and losses to North Carolina (x2), Gotham and the Spirit all hampered its spirits throughout the competition.

Gotham, though not much better with just one win across their six games, at least has the better history against Sunday’s opposition as it opens its regular season campaign on the road. It was in Orlando that Gotham earned that lone win by a single goal, a theme that would stick with it throughout. Gotham has scored exactly one goal in each of its last five matches and has failed to score multiple goals in any of its last 10 matches in all competitions. That stands as the team’s longest such streak since going 14 games without two or more goals, spanning the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
