The Red Bulls opened the scoring in the seventh minute of play, when forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting struck a shot off the post and midfielder Mohammed Sofo was there to put in the rebound.
New York doubled the lead in the 30th minute, when defender Omar Valencia played a ball back to captain Emil Forsberg at the top of Nashville’s box, and Forsberg curled home his effort.
Sofo scored his first career MLS goal in his first career MLS start in tonight’s match.
The midfielder became the 30th different player to score the opening goal of the season for New York in 30 seasons.
Forsberg scored his first goal of the season and the 10th MLS goal of his career.
