NYCFC drop last regular season away game to DC United 3-1

By Sean McCaffery, October 22, 2018

NYCFC won the Atlantic Cup in the last game at RFK now they have lost their frist at Audi Field, the new, Green home of the United, we are unsure if they took the racoons with them.  This loss although never good to lose so near the start of the 2nd season is tempered by the fact that they are already in for it and anything but a loss on the 28th facing the Union has them in spot #3 of the Eastern Conference. Following 3 weeks of no games and minus both Berget & Moralez, the deck was stacked against the vistors from the start before the 20,000 United faithful. Barely a minute in, a Rooney headed ball went just wide of the far post. Four minutes later a scrum in front of the goal led to a goal which was ruled off side for the Black & Red. At 8' Rooney sent a home a ball from Acosta after he beat 4 defenders. Villa had a chance but former teammate Brilliant forced him wide and his shot hit the side netting, the opposite side netting was then struck by Callens at the 22' mark from a header. Rooney shortly returned the favor with a weaving run to set up Acosta.  Before the first half hour was in the books, Villa and Castellanos, who we interviewed earlier in the week. both forced Hamid into a pair of saves. Early second half action saw Taty shoot just high and Ring missed from barely outside the penalty area. A handling penalty called on Ring gave Rooney his brace at 74'. Villa clawed one back at 78' to close out the scoring with his 13th on the year. Herrera made his first game since May, a bit more depth as the playoffs await.
