NPSL Alters their Season for 2020

By Sean McCaffery, September 18, 2019

NPSL, with their local team the NY Cosmos have made a minor change to their schedule. They will next play in 2 parts, spring & fall, kicking off in early March then until Late April, May- Mid August will be thier break as the fall starts late Aug. until Nov. when the national title game will be held. Neither of their seasons would cause a conflict with the summer season, with unique standings for both the early and later seasons. Those partaking in the spring and fall will be required to field teams in the existing summer as well. NPSL Chairman Kenny Farrell stated, "We are excited to offer our members, players, staff, fans and supportes the highest level of amateur soccer available in the United States." This season fills a great need in American soccer. A longer season will providde more opportunities for our players, while teams will benefit from a year-round presense in their markets." These spring/seasons bring with them higher stands as far as venues, staffing, budget and refs go. The resultant higher levels of play and competition will be great for all. NPSL Managing Director Cindy Spera added, "There are many talented players that want something beyond a summer season. This season fills a gap, offering players a longer season that will provide additional opportunities for development  and exposure." Those in the spirng/fall seasons are to be amateur or unpaid pros, under USASA and not subject to Pro League Standards. USASA E. Dir. Duncan Riddle contributed, "This will allow players and fans more opportunities to play and support their local teams."  Teams being fielded for the spring/falll are yet to be anounced and vetted by NPSL staff.
