FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
AMERICAN SOCCER CLUB NEW YORK BLANKS
AC NEWPORT 5-0 AT STONY BROOK
The Fighting Tomcats cruise to a record-setting win
Uniondale, NY (May 16th, 2026) – American Soccer Club New York notched their first victory of the 2026 National Premier Soccer League season beating AC Newport 5-0 at Lavalle Stadium on the campus of Stony Brook University in the team’s first ever match in Suffolk County. It was the first shutout in club history as goalkeeper Aidan Ganun recorded the clean sheet. The Fighting Tomcats also scored the most goals in a single match in team history.
ASC New York (1-0-1) bounces back after a 2-1 loss in their season opener on May 2nd against the New York Shockers while AC Newport (0-1-0) drops the first match in team history.
“I think this was a culmination of the frustration of the way we lost the first game,” said ASC New York Head Coach John Fitzgerald. “We kind of took that frustration out tonight, but in a good way. It still wasn’t a complete game as far as our standards, as we still have to be a lot cleaner on the ball. Overall, it was very positive. The guys had a great mindset about it. “
Brian Saramago opened the scoring for Fighting Tomcats in the 11th minute. He took a feed from Leo Pinto and fired a shot past AC Newport goalkeeper Aris Taki.
“I just kind of opened up wide and called for the ball from Leo,” said Saramago. “He knows I like to make that run. He’s someone who I have a good connection with on the field and he just played it in behind. I kept driving and I was, at first, thinking of crossing it but the center back wasn’t coming over so I took touch closer to the net and just shot it far post.”
During first half stoppage time, midfielder Sean Fitzgerald, who was serving as captain for the match, scored to make it 2-0 Fighting Tomcats at halftime. In the second half, ASC New York continued the onslaught as Aidan Kolbe took a pass from Saramago and scored to make it 3-0 in the 58th minute.
American Soccer Club New York was in complete control for 90 minutes.
“It felt amazing,” said Saramago. “Coming out here in front of the home fans and getting a 5-0 win always feels amazing. I think today we showed how we play when we’re firing on all cylinders. We will build on this momentum and keep getting results.”
Columbian defender Ezequiel Palomeque made it 4-0 when he scored on a brilliant free kick in the 88th minute. The Fighting Tomcats put the finishing touches on the victory when Chris Morandi scored in the 90th minute on a feed from 17-year-old midfielder Dylan Lopez.
For Lopez, who came on a second half substitution in the 73rd minute, it was his first career NPSL point.
“It feels wonderful,” said Lopez. “To be able to get that assist in a 5-0 win tonight just feels amazing. I looked up in the stands and saw my mom. I felt proud. I just feel a warm sensation in my soul. I feel great. To be a part of the team like that means a lot to me.”
Lopez was in the match because he had earned the playing time.
“I’m very happy for him,” said Fitzgerald. “We only put him in because we thought he could help us and not for any other reason. At that point of the game, we thought it was good for him and good for us. He came on and made a positive impact.”
American Soccer Club New York returns to action on Saturday May 23rd when they visit AC Newport for the Fighting Tomcats’ first road match of the season. Kickoff at Salve Regina University-Toppa Field is set for 6pm.
The next ASC New York home match will be on Saturday June 6th when they host New Haven United FC at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. Kickoff is set for 6pm and tickets are available on the American Soccer Club New York website www.ascnewyork.com.
