Clarets defeated at Turf Moor
Burnley's spirited second half display ultimately to be proved in vain, as the Clarets fell to a first defeat in three Premier League outings, losing 3-1 to Newcastle United at Turf Moor.
In a lively first half, the Geordies were two goals to the good inside the opening six minutes. Joelinton scored with just over a minute on the clock, before Yoane Wissa doubled the visitors' advantage soon after.
The Clarets, to their credit, didn't cave in and they were rewarded for their response midway through the half, when Josh Laurent slammed home his first Premier League goal.
Burnley created a host of decent chances in the second period, with Marcus Edwards seeing a shot saved; Laurent's header coming back off the bar; and Lucas Pires' cross-come-shot kept out by Nick Pope.
The Clarets threw absolutely everything at Eddie Howe's men in a one-sided second half, leaving it all out on the pitch, but the Geordies had the final say in stoppage time, with Bruno Guimaraes making the most of a defensive mix-up to clinch the visitors' victory.
Scott Parker made three changes from the Clarets' 0-0 draw against Everton last time out, with Maxime Estéve, Florentino and Loum Tcahouna all named in the starting XI.
It took the visitors just 66 seconds to break the deadlock, as Anthony Gordon broke down the left, before zipping a cross into the area for Joelinton to steer home into the far corner and give United the lead.
The Magpies were quick out of the blocks and doubled their lead five minutes later. Wissa prodded it in from close range, despite Kyle Walker’s initial goal-line clearance and Martin Dúbravka's efforts to get a hold of it under physical pressure from Bruno Guimaraes, who appeared to shove Laurent to the ground.
Burnley were then dealt another early blow shortly after, with Estéve forced to make way after picking up a knock on his return to the starting XI - Bashir Humphreys coming on as his replacement.
Midway through the first-half, the Clarets carved open their first real opportunity, as Marcus Edwards drove forward from midfield towards the edge of the area, before unleashing a strike just wide of Nick Pope’s post.
Just minutes later, however, the home side did half the deficit and what a finish it was, as Laurent latched onto Armando Broja’s flick-on and fired it home with an excellent first-time volley into the bottom corner for his first top-flight goal.
After a spell of possession from the Clarets following that goal and a fantastic response to going two goals down, Newcastle came close to adding a third goal a few minutes before half-time, as Burnley-born Harvey Barnes raced through on goal, but saw his effort denied by the hands of Dúbravka.
After a promising end to the half for the hosts, the final chance of the first 45 minutes fell Burnley’s way, as Edwards saw his sweeping strike from inside the box blocked and cleared off the line by Magpies defender Fabian Schar.
The Clarets started the second-half where they left off and were on the front foot straight from the first whistle, winning a couple of early corners, before Tchaouna saw his low drilled effort saved by Pope.
Newcastle couldn’t get hold of the ball and the dominating hosts had another chance minutes later, but Edwards’ strike from inside the area was denied by the hands of Pope after being played in by Broja, before Laurent then saw his header loop onto the crossbar, before being cleared.
Parker’s side were giving it more than a go and had another chance with just over 20 minutes left on the clock, but Tchaouna’s back-post header narrowly sailed over the target.
As Burnley pushed for the equaliser, the Clarets made a second change, with Jacob Bruun Larsen replacing Tchaouna.
Toon sub Jacob Murphy squandered a glorious chance to make it three for the visitors with 12 minutes to go, firing over from close range, but the Geordies did add to their tally in stoppage time, with Guimaraes lofting the ball into an empty net to secure the three points, after a defensive lapse at the heart of the Burnley defence.
