Goalscorer reflects on defeat to Magpies

Despite a spirited performance a disappointing first 10 minutes gave Newcastle United the three points at Turf Moor on Tuesday evening.

Speaking after the game, Josh Laurent who found the back of the net on the night, his first goal in the top-flight, said whilst there were positives to take from the performance, the Clarets need to be more ruthless in both boxes to start coming away with points.

CONCEDING THE TWO EARLY GOALS

“We’re all disappointed to come away with nothing again after a really good performance. I think the first thing we have to address as a group is we can’t start games like we did in the first 10 minutes – that’s on us, it’s on no one else, it’s us on the pitch. We’ve got to start better than that. I thought the second goal was a foul in my opinion. But it’s still a poor start from us.

“We showed great character and great fight to get back into the game and not only get back into but be the better team. We should have won the game. That’s the second thing we need to address; we’ve got to start being more ruthless in box boxes. We’ve got to start finishing these chances, that’s probably two games on the bounce now where we should have come away with all three points. We haven’t come away with the maximum points we should have.”

THE REACTION SHOWN

“One thing that’s for certain with this group is we’re never going to give up. Even when that second goal goes in, I have full belief in the men around me, this group that the Gaffer’s put together, and what he instils, what he believes in – it’s in all of us. I had no doubt looking across at the 10 other men with me on that pitch that we weren’t going to give up. We’re going to give every little bit of us in every game.

“It’s just that cutting edge that we lack. We’re never going to stop fighting and I think that needs to stick with us throughout. We need to start being ruthless though to start turning these disappointing nights, that shouldn’t be disappointing, and turn them into positives.”

FIRST PREMIER LEAGUE GOAL

“Every time I play for this club in this league, I’m proud and I want to give my all. It will be a proud moment, I’m sure once I go back home and see my family and things like that, they’ll remind me how proud I should be. Right now, it just hurts though.”

SHOWING FIGHT & GROUP TOGETHERNESS

“No matter who steps on that pitch we’re going to give it everything and we’re going to fight as a group. That’s what we’ve always had since the day I joined here. I have full confidence being on that pitch that we’re going to fight and be together. We went through a real bad patch in terms of results, we’re still there, but we had to stop the rot at Bournemouth and we did. I thought the boys did well to do that.

“Then Everton I thought we progressed again, another clean sheet, having chances and we should have won the game.

“Tonight, 10 minutes of the game probably cost us, but I thought we played more than well enough, we were the better team tonight to go and win the game. There are positives we just need to keep going and improve that little bit in both boxes.”
