U21S MATCH REPORT: NEWCASTLE UNITED 3-2 BURNLEY
Stoppage-time strike condemns young Clarets to defeat
A late Newcastle United winner condemned Burnley U21s to a 3-2 Premier League 2 defeat that their performance didn’t deserve on Saturday afternoon.
Joe Bevan and Jesse Williams were on target for the young Clarets in a four-minute second half spell, but it wasn’t enough to earn a result in the Northeast.
There were two changes to the eleven that started last week's home match against Birmingham City, with Oisin Cooney keeping goal.
Joe Ashton returned to the defence alongside Hannes Delcroix and Williams in the central three, with Bevan and Vernon Masara leading the line.

After a tightly contested start it was Newcastle’s Sean Neave who had the first shot of note in the ninth minute, but it skimmed the top of the bar.
The young Clarets started to gain more of a foothold soon afterwards though, but Bevan and Ellis Clark’s shots from 20 plus yards were well wide.
It was a penalty that opened the scoring with 34 on the clock. After Oli Pimlott was adjudged to have fouled Alfie Harrison, Neave confidently picked out the bottom left corner from 12 yards.
The goal seemed to spark Andy Farrell’s side into life as Pouani swept narrowly over from 20 yards and Bevan worked the ‘keeper with a powerful strike, but there was no equaliser before the break.
Farrell and Charlie Adam’s half-time team talk had the desired effect as their players came out of the starting blocks firing.
After Masara spurned a one-on-one chance and Ashton had a powerful effort blocked, Bevan restored parity with a well-placed effort that took a nick on its way in.

The turn around was complete in the 62nd minute thanks to a well-worked corner routine. Clark’s deep delivery was knocked down by Delcroix, and Williams was on hand to fire home.
Farrell tuned to his bench for the first time soon afterwards, replacing Bevan with Benji Wetshi. Further changes then saw Zach Johnson and Charlie Veevers replace Pouani and Clark respectively
Pimlott then forced a flying save from the Newcastle ‘keeper and the Toon teenagers went straight up the other end to equalise through substitute Joe Brayson.
Our final switch saw Marley Leuluai replace Brierley and the Clarets had the better of the possession and territory as they went in search of a winning goal.
It wasn’t to be, though, and Neave scored his second and Newcastle’s third of the day with a first-time finish into the bottom left corner in the 92nd minute.
After nine PL2 matches the team’s points tally stands at six, and they’re next in action against Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League Cup on Thursday 20th November.
