Captain discusses taking positives to go again next week

Josh Cullen felt that there were positives the Clarets could take from Saturday's defeat to Tottenham Hotspur despite the scoreline on the day.

Pleased with the reaction that the team showed to conceding early, the Clarets captain reflected on the punishing nature of the Premier League and said the squad need to 'take the positives, clean up in both boxes and go again next week'.

“We’ve learnt today what the Premier League is about. We probably didn’t start the game quite as we would have liked. Momentum got on their side pretty early and disappointed to concede so early but I think the reaction was really good. We got back into the game and some really positive moments in the first half, some chances and were probably unlucky not to come in level at half-time.

“Then the nature of the Premier League, we have two massive chances to make it 1-1 and then they go down the other end and score an overhead kick and you find yourself 2-0 behind.

“Then of course you’re chasing the game, spaces get bigger, and, in this league, you can get punished when that happens. But yes, positives to take, just need to clean up in both boxes really and I think we’ll be ok and bounce into next week.”

Scott Parker's side conceded ten minutes in to a Richarlison goal, before he went on to score again in the second half. The 29-year-old said it was those moments that highlighted what the team need to work on in the top-flight.

“We know we have good mentality as a group. We know we’ve got that togetherness to stick together and bounce back in tricky moments. To go 1-0 down here was disappointing but we reacted well. At the end of the day, we’ve been beaten by a bit of brilliance really to make it 2-0.

“We know there’s areas we need to improve, and we can’t give players in this league the sort of space we gave them today, for the goals. But there’s positives to take and we’ll go into next week full of belief and hopefully get our first three points of the season.”

The Clarets return to Turf Moor next Saturday to take on fellow promoted side Sunderland and Cullen's looking forward to being back on home turf.

“It’s always nice playing at home in front of our own fans, they’re going to be massive this season, to get behind us like they always do, create a great atmosphere at Turf Moor, and really push us on.

“It’s a good game to look forward to next week, back home, hopefully we can put on a positive performance. Build on what we achieved today, keep on making improvements and go again.”
