Clarets fall to opening day defeat

Despite a promising first-half and creating some dangerous chances, the Clarets suffered an opening day 3-0 defeat to Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

A Richarlison brace and Brennan Johnson strike proved to be the difference in the game, although Burnley could have had their name on the scoresheet more than once.

Scott Parker handed Burnley debuts to summer signings Martin Dúbravka, Kyle Walker and Quilindschy Hartman, with Oliver Sonne, Hjalmar Ekdal and Maxime Estève lining-up alongside them in defence.

Captain Josh Cullen was partnered in midfield by Josh Laurent and Hannibal, with Jaidon Anthony and Lyle Foster forming the attack.

Spurs were quick out the blocks and forced Dúbravka into early action, with a smart save with his legs to deny Lucas Bergvall from close range, after Estève had just cleared away Pedro Porro’s back-post cross.

However, just a few minutes later the hosts did have their breakthrough, as Mohammed Kudus broke down the right and picked out Richarlison inside the area, with the Brazilian finishing with a first-time effort into the bottom corner.

Despite going a goal down, Burnley did respond with a couple of promising attacks, as Estève saw a close-range header caught by Vicario, before Laurent then dragged an effort a whisker wide of the goal shortly after.

Spurs looked to apply more pressure with half-time approaching, but a resilient Clarets defence was standing strong to ensure a second goal of the half wasn’t added.

The final chance of the first 45 fell Burnley’s way, with Parker’s men really settling into it, as Sonne teed up Laurent on the edge of the area, but the midfielder’s effort was palmed over by Vicario for a corner.

There was time for a late penalty shout in stoppage time when Pedro Porro clattered into Anthony inside the box, but Michael Oliver waved away any appeals, before blowing for half-time shortly after.

Spurs started the second-half on the front foot, with Esteve blocking Richarlison’s strike, before Dúbravka denied the forward with his follow-up effort.

The Clarets then carved open a glorious opportunity, as Walker picked out Anthony with an exquisite long-range ball, with the winger slipping it through to an unmarked Hannibal inside the area, before van de Ven made a vital last-minute block to deny a strike on goal.

However, just moments later the home side had their second and so did Richarlison, with the striker latching onto Kudus’ cross and finishing with an acrobatic effort into the bottom corner.

Parker turned to his bench after that goal with half-an-hour left, with Lesley Ugochukwu coming on for his debut replacing Laurent and Jacob Bruun Larsen making his second Burnley debut after re-signing in the summer, coming on for Hannibal.

It was the hosts who struck again though just four minutes after those changes, with Johnson finishing into an empty goal.

The Clarets made further changes with the clock ticking down, as Zian Flemming and Loum Tchaouna were both introduced, with the latter making his Burnley debut.

Although Parker's side gave a good account of themselves and pushed for a goal, the hosts ensured they kept a clean sheet and sealed the win.

Burnley's attention now turns to next Saturday's clash with Sunderland at Turf Moor.
