June 3, 2025-Wave after wave of players were on the attack as the Stony Brook LGN Tsunami defeated Fox Academy Premier Nirvana, 4-0, to win the Girls-Under-12 State Open Cup championship on Sunday, June 1 at the Blue Sky Sports Complex in Middletown.
The cup’s namesake, Joanne Roth, was a beloved and smiling presence at the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) office until her untimely passing from ALS in 2019.
Sophia Albertina scored two goals, Allison Degen and Molly Gilmartin added one apiece while goalkeeper Gabriella Coscia had the shutout in net.
“I was so impressed with how we moved the ball. What also helped us was our history of being here as a club plus we knew the competition and the complex,” stated Stony Brook LGN coach Frank Stagnitta. “And the parents are super supportive.”
Stony Brook LGN also received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a US Soccer Life Member who died nine years ago, started the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) Sportsmanship Program in 1980 and it spread to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland, and in the process, made soccer games kinder and gentler.
Stony Brook LGN will represent Eastern New York at the East Regionals from June 28 to July 3 in Loudoun County, Virginia as part of the National Championship Series.
