Clarets continue remarkable form to tame the Tigers

A first goal in Claret & Blue for Bashir Humphreys and Zian Flemming’s ninth goal of the season was enough to see the Clarets claim all three points against Hull City on Wednesday night.

Humphreys drilled home the opener from outside the area with just three minutes played, before Flemming headed home Jaidon Anthony’s cross for his first goal at Turf Moor midway through the first half.

The win sees Burnley extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to 21 matches and they remain undefeated at Turf Moor all season.

Head Coach Scott Parker named an unchanged XI from the side that defeated Oxford United last week at Turf Moor.

Burnley started on the front foot from kick-off and it took the Clarets less than three minutes to break the deadlock.

Lyle Foster latched onto Connor Roberts’ cross-field pass, before working his way into the area and teeing up Humphreys just outside the box. The defender then drilled it perfectly into the far corner past the hands of Ivor Pandur to give the hosts an early lead.

The Clarets came close to doubling their lead just a few minutes later, as Anthony – a menace all evening – got the better of Sean McLoughlin, but saw his fierce strike pushed wide by Pandur.

Parker’s side limited Hull to any real opportunities on goal, before then adding the second goal of the night midway through the first-half.

Hannibal picked out Anthony with a delightful through ball using the outside of the foot down the right, with the winger breaking towards the area and finding Flemming with a pin-point cross to head home from close range.

The home side were cruising and came close to a third of the evening, but Hannibal’s fizzing strike flashed just wide of the target from the edge of the box.

Flemming then nearly secured his brace on the half-hour mark when the forward played a neat one-two with Roberts just inside the area, before seeing his strike skim inches wide of the post.

Following a dominant first-half from the Clarets, Parker’s side went into the break with a two-goal lead.

The Tigers’ first effort on target came just after the hour mark from forward Mason Burstow’s shot from outside the area, which was no trouble for James Trafford.

Parker turned to his bench with just under 20 minutes left on the clock, introducing Marcus Edwards for his league debut, fresh after scoring the winner at Southampton in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Trafford was forced into his first real bit of action on the night with 75 minutes played, as the Burnley No.1 was there to deny Joao Pedro’s effort with a smart stop.

There was a late opportunity for the hosts when Foster saw his curled strike denied by Pandur, which turned out to be the final chance of the game.

Burnley now turn their attention to Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off at Deepdale, as the Clarets travel to Preston North End.
