Clarets head to the south coast to take on Pompey

Scott Parker's side head to Fratton Park on Saturday afternoon, as the Clarets take on Portsmouth in the Sky Bet Championship.

Burnley go into this weekend in impressive form, on a 17 match unbeaten run in all competitions and currently have the best away record in the league, having won six of their last seven away games in the Championship.

The Clarets currently sit third in the league table prior to Saturday's trip to the coast, just three points off first place Leeds United and a win against Pompey could see Parker's men back in the automatic promotion places.

Portsmouth are two points above the relegation zone in 21st place, but despite their position, the hosts have won four of their last five home matches.

The opposition

Following a seven-year spell in the Premier League, which saw Pompey secure two top-10 finishes, win the 2008 FA Cup and subsequently compete in Europe, relegation to the second tier was confirmed in 2010.

A 16th place finish in the Championship upon their return was followed by back-to-back relegations, which saw Portsmouth in League Two by 2013.

The Fratton Park side found themselves in the fourth tier for four seasons, before promotion in 2017 which saw them lift the league title and reach League One.

After seven attempts at securing promotion back to the Championship, that was achieved last season as John Mousinho's side won the League One title and returned to the second tier for the first time since 2012.

Pompey started the 2024/25 campaign bright with an opening day 3-3 draw at Elland Road, before draws with Millwall and Middlesbrough were followed by defeats against Sunderland and West Brom.

Despite sitting 21st in the league table, Portsmouth are unbeaten in seven of their last eight home games at Fratton Park, as they looked to secure a second campaign in the Championship.

In the home dugout

Former Oxford United, Burton Albion and Preston North End midfielder John Mousinho began his managerial career two years ago this month.

Mousinho was appointed Head Coach of League One side Pompey in January 2023 and secured his first win for the club against Exeter in his first game in charge.

After an 8th place finish for the 2022/23 campaign, Mousinho began his first full season in fine fashion with the Portsmouth boss awarded EFL League One Manager of the Month for September.

Following an impressive season, which saw Pompey in and around the automatic promotion places for the majority of the year, Mousinho’s side clinched promotion to the Championship in April of this year and were crowned League One Champions.

What Scott Parker said

"Monday wasn't a classic, we know that and our intention was to go out there and win the game. We didn't do that, but we also stopped Leeds, who are top of the league, from scoring and executed them from being a threat.

"It's a good point for us overall, but we need to back it up this weekend at Portsmouth. At home they are a real force and it's a difficult place to go, they are unbeaten in seven of their last eight home games.

"They're an aggressive team, it's a tight stadium with the supporters right on top and we are well aware of the challenges that they will pose.

"We will need to give it a real good go down there and be at our best. We have been good away from home this season, so hopefully we can continue that on Saturday."
