Players to watch:

Houston are led by attacker María Sánchez, who had the game-winning assist in the Dash’s 2-1 win over Racing Louisville in the Challenge Cup group stage finale. Scoring one goal and contributing three assists in total, Sánchez contributed 100% of her team’s assists in six games played and was the only player with multiple goal contributions. Though she led the team in total shots and shots on target, forward Rachel Dalywas unable to add more than a goal in her six Challenge Cup games, something she will look to put right as the Dash kick off their regular season.

San Diego forward Alex Morgan has been one of the Wave’s consistent threats to date, with her four goals in the group stage second only to Washington’s Ashley Hatch (5) in the final tally. Across the whole of 2021, Morgan scored five goals in 15 games across all competitions for Orlando, leaving her one shy of matching last year’s total.

Match facts: Houston hosts San Diego to begin its 2022 regular season quest and will look to build on its Challenge Cup efforts against a high-energy Wave FC side that sat 4th in goals scored (9) and assists created (6) in its six games played. Where Houston struggled to produce in attack, San Diego took the third-most shots (66) and registered the second-most shots on target (38) from those attempts.

Houston did manage to pick up wins in both games against Racing Louisville, a stunning 3-2 comeback in late March added to by a 2-1 win to close the group stage last week. However, they lost their other four matches suffering defeat to Chicago and Kansas City, home and away, spelling out the struggles the side had staying competitive in the Challenge Cup.

Not much different in results, though, San Diego’s lone win of their tournament came against Angel City at home, with losses to both OL Reign (x1) and Portland (x2) only saved by points against Angel City on the road and OL Reign at home. However, though their attacking stats spell progress, the Wave have both scored and allowed at least one goal in all three of their road games so far as an NWSL club. The only team to allow more goals in away matches in this year’s tournament than San Diego (7) was fellow expansion side Angel City FC (9).
