Players to watch:
Chicago forward Mallory Pugh led the Red Stars with four goals in the 2022 Challenge Cup, grabbing a brace on two separate occasions. She is the only player to have more than one multi-goal game in Challenge Cup history and finished high up the league charts in both total shots registered and shots on goal. In midfielder, Vanessa DiBernardo both scored one and assisted on another in her six games played. The Napierville native scored in the club’s loss to Kansas City in march and tallied her assist in a win over Houston in early April.
Racing Louisville relied on seven different goalscorers in their Challenge Cup exploits, most recently tapping on the shoulder of midfielder Jaelin Howell, who scored in Louisville’s loss to Houston on Sunday. Howell also scored her first goal for the U.S. Women’s National Team in April against Uzbekistan, as the rising star continues to earn her stripes. Elsewhere, the only two players with both a goal and assist to their name are Emina Ekic and Jessica McDonald, both of whom were a big part of Louisville’s Cup run when fit.
Match facts: The Red Stars narrowly missed out on the top spot in the Central Division but are now able to turn their attention to their regular season opener against familiar opposition on Racing Louisville FC. Now looking for their first win in NWSL play since April 2, Chicago returns home for the first time since that night to welcome their regional rivals.
History is not on the hosts’ side in season openers, with the Red Stars having not won an NWSL season opener since 2015, a 3-2 victory over the Reign. Perhaps not coincidentally, this was also the last time Chicago opened the season at home. Chicago has been shut out in both home matches against Louisville as well (D1 L1), and the only other team the Red Stars failed to score against in their first two homes matches was the Thorns back in 2013.
Racing Louisville opened last season with a 0-0 draw against Kansas City, but the only time since then that Louisville and its opponent did not score a goal was in this year’s Challenge Cup in their previous scoreless draw in Chicago. Now Louisville travels to Chicago seeking their first win against the Red Stars since their dominant 3-0 showing in June of last year.
Ways to watch: Fans in the United States can watch the match on Paramount+ while fans in Canada and abroad will be able to watch on Twitch.
