Six Student-Athletes Honored as College Players of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Sept. 22, 2021) – United Soccer Coaches announced its College Player of the Week awards on Wednesday afternoon, with six student-athletes representing NCAA Division I, II, III men's and women's soccer.
NCAA Division I Men: Sergi Martinez (Bowling Green) NCAA Division I Women: Skylar Kuzmich (Hofstra) NCAA Division II Men: Alexis Iturria (Clayton State) NCAA Division II Women: Sydney Jimmo (Catawba College)
NCAA Division III Men: Leonardo Torres (Marymount-Va) NCAA Division III Women: Bella Green (Lycoming College)

Bowling Green’s Sergi Martinez (Barcelona, Spain) had a goal in each match as the Falcons went 2-0 last week. Martinez scored early in the second half to cap the scoring in BGSU’s 3-0 win over Wright State, then scored what proved to be the winning goal as the Falcons took down nationally-ranked FIU three days later. With the five-point week, he now has a team-leading nine points on the season, on three goals and three assists. The Falcons are now 5-1-1 on the season, with the only loss coming against defending national champion Marshall.
In women's NCAA DI play, junior goalkeeper Skylar Kuzmich (Abington, Ma) led Hofstra to a shutout against nationally-ranked Princeton. Her seven saves contributed to her third-straight shutout, helping her earn the title of Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week.
First-year midfielder Alexis Iturria had a massive week for Clayton State, tallying four goals and an assist in two wins. On the women's side, Sydney Jimmo, a sophomore from Shelburne, Vt., had an equally big week for Catawba as she led her squad to wins over Chowan (5-1) and Anderson (4-0). She scored a hat trick with two assists in the Chowan victory and then added two goals and an assist against Anderson. For the week she had five goals with three assists for 13 points.
In DIII action, Leonardo Torres (Manassas, Va) scored 11 points over three games (4 G, 3 A) for Marymount (Va). Torres currently leads the nation in points (21) and is in top three in goals (8) and assists (5). Lycoming College junior forward Bella Green (South Williamsport, Pa.) earned her second MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week award based on her record over three games. Green had 12 points on four goals and four assists to lead the Warriors to a 3-0 week. |
Each Wednesday during the college regular season, United Soccer Coaches selects a men's and women's Player of the Week for NCAA Divisions I, II, and III and Junior College competition based on nominations from schools and conferences. Nominations are due every Tuesday by 10 a.m. CT to be considered.
