The punishment I feel does fit the crime, but justice delayed is in this case, justice denied. It is not the same team, players executives, coach etc. as the year before, they must suffer for these misdeeds, done before their arrival, why not last year, lose home games or other such penalties. They crossed the budgetary and roster regulations of the league. They placed in the wrong classifications Matuidi & Reyes, they were to be listed as DP's, but that would have had the team over 3. Further numbers were fudged in the pay of Pirez, Figal & Caranza.
The team suffered in that there was a $2,000,000 fine, a quater of a million to Managing Owner, Jorge Mas fined, that is pocket money to him . Paul McDonough who has moved on from his positions of COO and Sporting Director, suspended until the end of the 2022 season. Their Allocation dollars were reduced by a large sum, $2,271,250 for 2022 & '23.
All players remain at the same pay rate and not were thought to have played any role in this. Their active deals within MLS are unaffected.
MLS Commish, Don Garber had this to say "The integrity of our rules is sacrosanct, and it is a fundamental principle of out league that our clubs are responsible for adhering to all league regulations. Our rules will not be compromised. These sanctions reflect the severity of Inter Miami's violations, and will serve as a deterrent for clubs from violating roster rules."
Other owner Becks, etal were cleared of any wrong doing. Mas was in the postition of giving the OK on all player-related business. He was the be all end all for the team having proper limits and procedures installed, assuring such rules being adhered to. He was forth coming with other details but did not bring the Matuidi issue to light in a timely fashions as required by league regs.
