NEW YORK – The New York Cosmos announced today that the team has signed midfielder Walter Restrepo. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“It was a difficult decision for me to leave San Antonio, especially after winning the NASL title there last year,” said Restrepo. “However, the Cosmos’ vision and commitment to winning and the opportunity to play with players such as Raúl and Marcos Senna was one that was hard to turn down.”
In 2014, Restrepo, 26, was named to the NASL Best XI for the second time after recording three goals and four assists in 25 games for the San Antonio Scorpions. Prior to San Antonio, he played three seasons with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers from 2011-2013. Restrepo had a standout 2012 campaign for Fort Lauderdale, leading the league with eight assists and adding six goals en route to an NASL Best XI selection.
“He’s a very good offensive talent with the skills to break down defenders out wide,“ said Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese. “He offers something different that perhaps we didn’t have last year.”
Restrepo was born in San Diego and played professionally in Colombia from 2006-2010, appearing in both the first and second division for Deportes Tolima, Boyacá Chicó and Expreso Rojo. He has also represented the Colombian national team at the U-17 level.
