Mutually Agree to Part Ways
HARRISON, NJ (December 22, 2023) – NJ/NY Gotham FC today announced that the club and U.S. Women’s National Team midfielder Kristie Mewis have mutually agreed to part ways, as Mewis explores other opportunities.

“I want to start by saying thank you. Thank you to the ownership and front office for your tireless hours behind the scenes, thank you to my teammates for teaching me what it’s like to believe again, thank you to the coaches for your contagious positivity, and thank you to our amazing fans who never gave up on us,” said Mewis. “Gotham has been the most rewarding community to be a part of for the last two years and will always hold a special place in my heart. I’m full of gratitude knowing the future is bright and I was able to be part of it. And most importantly, I’ll never forget our first championship, together.”

Mewis joined Gotham FC in December 2021 and has appeared in 39 games, recording 3,070 minutes, seven assists, and four goals across all competitions in her two full seasons with the club.

“Kristie is an amazing player, and her work ethic behind-the-scenes is what makes her even more special and great to work with,” said Gotham FC Head Coach Juan Carlos Amorós. “It has been an amazing season for her and the club. It has also been a pleasure to work with Kristie. She helped us win the championship and make history for the club, while she also achieved her personal goals for the season. We would like to thank her for all her efforts this season, as it has not been an easy one for her.“

After scoring a penalty kick for the USWNT in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the midfielder returned to Gotham FC and played a crucial role in the 2023 NWSL Playoffs semifinal on Nov. 5. Mewis provided the 107th minute, game-winning assist to Katie Stengel that defeated the Portland Thorns and sent Gotham FC to the 2023 NWSL Championship.

“Kristie is a tremendous player and a true professional on and off the field,” said Gotham FC General Manager and Head of Soccer Operations Yael Averbuch West. “We are happy to support her in pursuing her next step in her career and are excited to follow her progress.”

An 11-year NWSL veteran, Mewis joined Gotham FC following five seasons with the Houston Dash where she helped lead the team to the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup Championship.
