Honours even in Turf Moor clash

Burnley were held to a share of the spoils at Turf Moor, despite a dominant second-half display against the Toffees.

Scott Parker's side created more than enough chances to win the game in BB10, but having failed to make the most of their opportunities, they were left pondering what might have been at the end of a bruising encounter.

Jacob Bruun Larsen squandered the best of the chances, firing over when one-on-one with Jordan Pickford early in the second period.

Parker's men left everything on the pitch, but it wasn't to be, as honours ended even.

The Clarets boss made three changes to his starting XI following the 1-1 draw at AFC Bournemouth last weekend.

Bashir Humphreys replaced the injured Joe Worrall, with Marcus Edwards and Armando Broja both rewarded for their respective impacts from the bench at the Vitality, starting at the expense of Jaidon Anthony and Zian Flemming.

The Clarets started brightly on a crisp December afternoon, with a corner falling kindly to Josh Cullen inside the area, which was blocked, but only into the path of Lucas Pires, who then curled an effort just wide of the post.

After a fairly dominant start from the Clarets, Everton carved open their first chance of the game with 13 minutes played, as Tyler Dibling’s stinging effort across the face of the box was narrowly missed by the lurking Beto.

Burnley were certainly growing into it and the hosts created another opportunity midway through the first-half, but Armando Broja could only guide Jacob Bruun Larsen’s cross over the target from close range.

With little to separate the two teams, the Toffees crafted another chance for themselves with the half-hour mark approaching, but Carlos Alcaraz’s point-blank header was comfortably held by Dúbravka.

Despite a flurry of possession with half-time on the horizon, the Clarets just couldn’t breakthrough the Everton defence, with the two sides heading into the break goalless.

The Clarets were dealt an early blow five minutes into the second-half, as Josh Cullen picked up a knock in a collision with Tim Ireogbunam, which saw the skipper forced off with Florentino coming on to replace him.

Moments after that change, Burnley carved open a glorious chance, as Edwards dinked a lovely ball over the Toffees’ defence, which Bruun Larsen latched onto, but the attacker could only steer over the crossbar with just Jordan Pickford to beat.

Parker’s men were looking the stronger of the two teams and had another chance just a minute later, but Bruun Larsen’s effort at the back-post was forced wide for a corner.

Straight up the other end, Dúbravka was forced into action to get down low to keep out Beto’s clever back-heeled strike, with the game just passing the hour mark.

With the momentum more than in Burnley’s favour, Parker made his second switch of the afternoon with just over 20 minutes left on the clock, as Jaidon Anthony replaced Bruun Larsen.

And it was the hosts who had another opportunity once again a few minutes later, when Lesley Ugochukwu’s effort was blocked into the path of Humphreys, who rifled a shot just narrowly wide of the bottom corner.

Despite coming close and pushing for a late winner, the Clarets were forced to share the points, with focus now switching to Tuesday's clash with Newcastle United back at Turf Moor.
