San Diego Wave FC vs. Angel City FC National Broadcast from April 2 Draws 456,000 Viewers on CBS Making it One of the Largest TV Audiences in NWSL History

From SAN DIEGO WAVE (April 6, 2022) – San Diego Wave Fútbol Club continues to make history with last Saturday’s match against Angel City FC drawing a national television audience of 456,000 viewers, making it one of the largest TV audiences in NWSL. The April 2 match, which ended in a 4-2 victory for San Diego, aired on CBS and was officially the 6th largest viewing audience in the league’s 10-year history.

“It's no surprise that we drew big numbers on the CBS TV game. I've been telling everyone not to sleep on women's sports,” said Alex Morgan, Forward, Wave FC. “It was a good game. It was good product that we put on the field, an exciting match, and the numbers show that. Looking at that consistently, you see the investment in women's sports needs to continue. We're going to continue to do what we need to do on the field. I think that number in a preseason tournament just shows how exciting the season is going to be.”

“Seeing that we had one of the largest audiences in the history of the league this weekend on CBS, it's just incredible to see the attention that we're drawing,” said Jodie Taylor, Forward, Wave FC. “I think a lot of that come down to exposure. When we get the exposure, the attention is there and the interest is there from the fans. I hope they can keep showing our games on TV and give us that exposure because clearly there is an upward trend. It's incredible to see and hopefully we just keep getting more and more exposure and more interest in the game.”

“For the broadcast to have such high figures, almost half a million people watching, is amazing and something that we should be really proud of,” said Rich Gunney, Assistant Coach, Wave FC. “It’s a sign that the product on the field is a great product. I'm sure the viewership will continue to grow along with that.”

Wave FC will try and continue to build on this result during its second road match of the 2022 Challenge Cup as it visits OL Reign Thursday, April 14 at Lumen Field and Portland Thorns on Sunday, April 17 at Providence Park.
