Long Island native Hank Steinbrecher Honored Yet Again

By Sean McCaffery, October 31, 2018

From the Island of Long to Quaker Oats to US Soccer Secretary General and onto the National Soccer Hall of Fame, the honors just keep on coming. He is now set to receive the prestigous Honorary All-American Award from USC, the largest soccer coaches group. He will receive this award at their annual convention, Jan 12 in Chicago. USC President Lesle Gallimor stated, "It is an incredible honor to recognize Hank Steinbrecher with our Honorary All-American Award." From Levittown and no basement onto Mitchell Junior college finally to Davis & Elkins in W.VA.  he was on their 1970 NAIA National Champion team. Coaching was next. Warren Wilson College saw him serve as AD & HC, 1978-'80 led him down the trail to Appalachian State, & 3 conference titles in a row. BU was home from 1980-1984, the last year also saw him serve a venue director in Boston for the Olympic Games. What a successful coaching career, he enjoyed with 14 All-Americans and 11 NCAA tourney teams. Quaker Oats came calling in 1985, as he assumed the title of Director of Sports Marketing, overseeing the monster Gatorade came to be. US Soccer grabbed him up in 1990 and he remained there for a decade as Secretary General. Like Gatorade before it, USSF grew like wildfire, they pushed into uncharted territory on and off the pitch. His direct role with marketing saw the sponsorship programs expand, serving as the focal point with the most successful World Cup's to date, 1994 & 1999 with a small thing called the 1996 Atlanta Olympics thrown in for good measure. Into the Hall of Fame in 2005 as a builder, The esteemed Werner Fricker Award in 2012, honoring who establishes a lasting legacy in the history and structure of the Beautiful Game here in the states. More Halls of Fame than I even know of, New England Soccer Hall of Fame, Eastern New York State Hall of Fame and North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame, in November he enters the Long Island Soccer Foot Ball Hall of Fame, where I played for Levittowm in the mid 80's. What a resume he has including the 1990 Bill Jeffrey Long -Term Service award of the USC in 1990, given to those who raise the level in collegiate soccer. The 2015 Honor Award, the top such award in the USC for improving the soccer coaching profession or over all contributions to the game. He is still so very active with USC, even in their recent innovation, Comitment to Culture. The Hank Steinbrecher Cup is awarded to the top team in the USASA annually.  Wow!

The past winners that we have met & know include Jill Ellis, Sunil Gulati, JP Dellacamera, Tony DiCicco, Andrew Shue, Anson Dorrance, & Pele. We have atended the last few conventions and hope to be at this next one as well to congratulate a fellow Long Islander on a new honor
