CHICAGO (May 10, 2022) – The Round of 32 of the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, U.S. Soccer’s National Championship, got off to an exciting start as six teams – five from Division I (MLS) and one from Div. II (USL Championship) – punched their ticket to the next round. The remaining 10 games of the round will be broadcast on ESPN+ and also covered in a new whip-around show, ‘Open Cup Goalcast’, that will showcase all the goals, pivotal moments and celebrations on Wednesday night beginning shortly before 6:30 p.m. ET.

On the field Tuesday night, there was late drama in Kansas City where the home side, SKC, came from two goals down to defeat 10-man FC Dallas 4-2 in extra time. FCD had substitute José Martínez sent off in second-half stoppage time, one minute before Marinos Tzionis’ last-gasp equalizer for Kansas City.

Extra time was not enough to separate Detroit City FC and Louisville City FC as the two USL Championship clubs went to penalties after a hard-fought 1-1 draw. Lou City prevailed 4-2 in the shootout, no mean feat on the road in front of the boisterous Detroit crowd.

The only other lower-division team to compete on the night, South Georgia Tormenta FC of USL League One (Div. III), put in a hard shift on the road against Inter Miami FC (MLS) but fell 3-1.

Elsewhere all-MLS match-ups resulted in Orlando City SC staving off a late Philadelphia Union surge to win 2-1 at home, while New York Red Bulls traveled down I-95 to oust D.C. United 3-0. In the night cap, Los Angeles FC took out the visiting Portland Timbers 2-0.

The ‘Open Cup Goalcast’, a new whip-around show, will be hosted by Sebastian Salazar and Herculez Gomez as part of the duo’s bi-weekly soccer discussion show on ESPN+. During Wednesday night’s action, the Goalcast will air live in parallel to all 10 games that remain in the Round of 32 and will give fans up-to-the minute updates on all the highlights, goals, drama and celebrations as the quest to be crowned U.S. Soccer National Champions continues.

U.S. Soccer will conduct the Round of 16 Draw on Thursday, May 12. Teams will be pooled geographically into groups of four. A random draw will determine the pairings within each group. Instances where a logical geographic fit doesn’t exist in determining the groups will be resolved by random selection. The Round of 16 Draw will be broadcast on Futbol Americas with Sebastian Salazar and Herculez Gomez on ESPN+ at 8:30 p.m. ET/7:30 CT.

ROUND OF 32 MATCH RECAPS

Orlando City SC (MLS) 2, Philadelphia Union (MLS) 1

Orlando City SC broke open a scoreless tie with two goals in a three-minute span early in the second half at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Fla. Goalkeeper Matt Freese kept the Union in the match with a couple of fine saves in the opening period, before Orlando City finally broke the deadlock. Ercan Kara lifted the hosts into the lead in the 54th minute, driving a left-footed attempt into the lower left corner. Andres Perea powered a 30-yard bullet into the corner to double the margin in the 57th minute. The Union, however, pulled one back in the 77th minute as Stuart Findlay put an eight-yard shot past keeper Mason Stajduhar on a scoring sequence that originated from a free kick. The game ended in dramatic fashion as Stajduhar saved Kai Wagner’s header on the final play four minutes deep into stoppage.

D.C. United (MLS) 0, New York Red Bulls (MLS) 3

The New York Red Bulls continued their amazing road run across all competitions with their seventh victory at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. Luquinhas led the way with a goal and an assist as the Red Bulls won for the second time in Open Cup action this tournament. Three minutes into first-half stoppage, Luquinhas converted a pass from Dru Yearwood past goalkeeper Rafael Romo from 12 yards out. He turned playmaker three minutes into the second half. The Brazilian midfielder raced down the right flank and fired a pass to John Tolkin at the top of the area as the defender drilled the ball home for a two-goal advantage. Substitute Zach Ryan scored his first professional goal with his first touch of the match, slipping in Cameron Harper's right-wing feed from close range a minute after entering in the 68th minute. U.S. Men's National Team center back and Red Bulls captain Aaron Long left the game in the 11th minute with a leg injury. Lucas Monzon, who replaced him, needed to be replaced by Ryan in the 67th minute. Goalkeeper Ryan Meara recorded the clean sheet.

Detroit City FC (USL Championship) 1, vs. Louisville City FC (USL Championship) 1 (2-4 PKs)

They say you never learn to swear until you kick it over the crossbar. Detroit City FC captain Stephen Carroll sent his match-deciding penalty over the bar in a shootout as Louisville City silenced the home side at the boisterous Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, Mich. Louisville goalkeeper Kyle Morton made a number of critical saves but none bigger than on the second attempt of the shootout when he dove to his right to stop Rhys Williams’ shot. Maxi Rodriguez’s well-taken spot-kick got Detroit City FC on the scoreboard first after Francis Atuahene earned a penalty in the box with a winding run in the 13th minute -- but Wilson Harris equalized later in the first half for Louisville off a corner kick that bounced around and sat up for him to smash home from the middle of the area. Morton stopped Antoine Hoppenot’s driving shot in the 70th minute to set up to scoreless period of overtime followed by the shootout, where four Louisville players scored past DCFC keeper Nate Steinwascher.

Inter Miami CF (MLS) 3, South Georgia Tormenta FC (USL League One) 1

The Goal Pup likes the directions given by coach Phil Neville. “As Phil said, ‘As long as we’re one unit moving in the same direction and with the same goal, all the results will follow,’” said Ari Lassiter, who scored his first two goals and was Man of the Match as Inter Miami ran away with a win at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The son of former MLS all-time goal leader Roy “Goal Dog” Lassiter, the “Goal Pup” sent a left-footed laser into the upper corner for the opening goal just before halftime, and secured his brace with a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and across the goal line to make it 3-0 in the 83rd minute. Robbie Robinson also had a goal for Inter Miami, who were playing a first U.S. Open Cup home match. Former Tottenham Hotspur FC product Kazaiah Sterling got behind the defense to score in the 87th minute for Tormenta FC, whose underdog run ends just shy of the Round of 16.

Sporting Kansas City (MLS) 2, FC Dallas (MLS) 2, 4-2 AET

Sporting Kansas City rallied from a two-goal deficit in the second half, leveling the match eight minutes into stoppage time, before getting two goals in extra time against 10-man FC Dallas at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan. A minute after Dallas' José Martínez was given his marching orders for his second yellow card for fouling Daniel Salloi, the hosts struck for the dramatic equalizer. Marinos Tzionis headed in Remi Walter's corner kick from seven yards at the near post past goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer. Only four minutes into extratime, Maurer saved a shot from Khiry Shelton, but the rebound went in off the back of defender Edwin Cerrillo for an own goal. Shelton got his name on the scoresheet in the 113th minute, stealing a lackluster pass and scoring from close range for an insurance tally. Sporting goalkeeper John Pulskamp gifted the visitors a goal in the eighth minute as Franco Jara intercepted his poor pass, before scoring his second goal in as many Open Cup matches. Edwin Munjoma doubled the advantage in the 34th minute, drilling home a Jader Obrian feed from the top left side of the box into the lower right corner. KC cut the lead in half on the hour mark. Nikola Vujnovic intercepted an errant pass and poked a 13-yard shot home to jump start the comeback.

Los Angeles FC (MLS) 2, Portland Timbers (MLS) 0

‘Chicha’ helped chop down some of the biggest trees in the American soccer forest. Christian ‘Chicha’ Arango and Mamadou Mbacke had goals on either side of halftime as LAFC earned a shutout at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles. Arango snuck the opening goal inside the near post in the 32nd minute for LAFC, and Mbacke was there to clean up a corner kick for the insurance goal. Portland second-half substitute Sebastian Blanco nearly had a goal but was denied by LAFC goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, who flew around his goal area in the second half to hold the clean sheet and help his club advance to the Round of 16 for the first time. The Timbers, a U.S. Open Cup semifinalist during the last iteration of the Open Cup in 2019, threw on a handful of subs in the final 20 minutes that began to tilt the game in their favor, but it was too little too late.
