Lamar Hunt US Open Cup for 2020 is Off

By Sean McCaffery, August 17, 2020

This is one of the oldest competitions in the world, a 106 year tradition has ended, it will be back next year, the only National Cup game with a deeper history is the Irish Cup in Northern Ireland, so it is named wrong as Northern Ireland was formed in 1921. The only other time it's play was greatly affected, yes, it was during another pandemic, from 1918-'20, then named the National Challenge Cup. Those years it did have champions, Bethlehem Steel who have 5 titles, took their 3rd and 4th in 1918 & '19 while Ben Miller FC out of St. Louis were the victors in 1920. A shame the new MLS side was unable to get in for this year to mark that title.

Yet another victim to the Coronavirus crisis, this Cup will live on. The effect on travel and fewer if any fansĀ  coupled with the rigid testing rules has lead the committee to cancel these nation wide games. Along with this Cup, qualifiers for the 2021 Open Div. have all been called off, those from the NPSL & USL League Two who were set for this 2020 competition will be good to go in 2021.

Open Cup Commish., Paul Marstaller informed "Despite this setback, the importance of the US Soccer's National Championship continues to grow . Every club cherishes the chance to compete for a major national trophy."

Who will receive the bid to the CCL as the winner of the Cup will be decided on in the future.
