Gotham FC vs. Boston Legacy FC
5/9 at Sports Illustrated Arena, Harrison, NJ

A match full of emotion; both on and off the field.
For Laís Araújo, #24 and central defender for Boston Legacy FC, this was a homecoming. New York City has long been her second home after her native Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
Laís first arrived in New York speaking no English and enrolled at ASA College, where she quickly became one of the finest players in the program’s history. Beyond her talent on the field, earning her degree was a remarkable accomplishment in itself. Her success there led to a full soccer scholarship to the University of Florida, where she once again showcased the same exceptional ability, determination, and leadership that had already defined her journey.
More than 40 friends, family members, and supporters gathered at Sports Illustrated Stadium; formerly Red Bull Arena….all there to cheer for our daughter Laís (my unofficial adapted daughter) every time she touched the ball.
The match itself was intense and dramatic. Gotham FC pushed relentlessly during the final 15 minutes searching for a winning goal on their home field, but Laís and the Boston Legacy defense stood strong. The visitors earned a valuable draw, thanks in large part to her stellar performance. She displayed the composure, talent, toughness, and leadership that helped make her successful during six years playing professionally in Europe.
One of the most emotional moments of the day came after the final whistle. Laís believed her beloved “dad” — myself — had already left the stadium. Instead, I surprised her on her way to the locker room. Our embrace brought back so many memories from the early days at the São Marcos Favela in Salvador, where this incredible journey first began. It has been a long road, and I could not be prouder of the woman and player she has become.
The afternoon had everything — great soccer, emotion, resilience, and even a yellow card from Laís to add a little extra spice to an already memorable Saturday in Harrison, New Jersey.
Now we look ahead to the rest of the season and, hopefully, many victories to come.

Let’s go, girl.
