NEW YORK CITY FC HEAD COACH PASCAL JANSEN
On veteran leadership and supporting younger players after the shootout... “That’s very interesting. I know who you’re referring to as veterans and they’re not necessarily old, but they have more experience and [more] games under their belt. Shared responsibility has been a key value from day one. In the penalty sequence, you could see those guys stepping up, taking responsibility, and being there for every player. Like I said after the game, when you’re 20 or 21 and you step up to take an important penalty, there’s always a chance you can miss. [In those moments,] your team has to be there to pick you up, get you ready for the week, and prepare for Game 3 [in the Round One Best-of-3 Series]. That’s exactly what we did.”
On traveling fans and their impact... “It’s great. During Game 1 [in the Round One Best-of-3 Series], they were there for us, and we’re very happy to have people traveling to see us. Especially in a big stadium like Charlotte’s, we’ll need all the support we can get. We’ll try to do our best and hopefully make both our traveling fans and those back home proud.”
NEW YORK CITY FC MIDFIELDER NICOLÁS FERNÁNDEZ MERCAU
On adapting to the team and joining late in the season... “I think I’ve said it on several occasions I adapted based on how I was treated and how integrated I felt with the group, the people at the club, and the staff. Honestly, they treated me incredibly well at all times, and that helped me feel very comfortable both on-and-off the pitch. I see this league as a great competition — you always have to be at your best, because if you don’t win or things don’t go well, you’re out. That’s good for competitiveness, and I like that it pushes you to keep improving every day.”
On facing the same opponent three times in quick succession... “Yes, that’s right. As you said, playing the same team three times in just a few days means they’ve studied us and know us well from the previous two matches. But I think the game will be decided by small details, and hopefully we’ll be up to the challenge.”
