Jay Rodriguez stoppage time winner seals all three points for the Clarets
A 94th minute penalty from Jay Rodriguez saw Burnley claim all three points in dramatic fashion against Swansea City in the Sky Bet Championship on Sunday afternoon.
The Clarets dominated the match at Turf Moor and created opportunities throughout, before substitute Rodriguez stepped up and kept his cool to slot home from the spot in stoppage time to seal the win.
Scott Parker named an unchanged side from the team that played West Brom on Thursday night, with defender Connor Roberts making his 100th appearance in Claret & Blue.
It was a quiet start at Turf Moor, with Burnley forcing a shot towards goal just before the 10th minute, after Josh Brownhill struck just over following some good build-up play.
Swansea had a chance of their own minutes later when Ronald broke down the right and into the area to tee up Joe Allen, but the former Liverpool man could only hit it wide of the target.
The Clarets were on the front foot and applying the pressure, as Zian Flemming came within inches of finding the back of the net. The Dutch forward connected onto Lucas Pires’ curling corner, but it sailed just wide of the goal.
Following another Burnley corner, Brownhill was next to test former Claret Lawrence Vigouroux, as the Chilean was forced into action to keep out the midfielder’s effort from outside the box.
Parker’s side were dominating possession with over 25 minutes played, Josh Cullen was next up to try break the deadlock, but Vigouroux was equal to the Ireland star’s strike.
A chance fell the Swans’ way six minutes before the break, as striker Zan Vipotnik lashed an effort at goal, but it could only find the side-netting.
As half-time approached, Jaidon Anthony then came close to putting the hosts ahead with his curled strike, before Pires fired over the crossbar from inside the area in stoppage time at the end of the first-half.
After a quiet 10 minutes at the start of the second-half, Burnley then carved open a chance when Roberts picked out Sarmiento inside the area, but the Ecuadorian winger could only guide it over the target with a first-time effort.
Flemming had another attempt on goal just past the hour mark, when the forward forced Vigouroux to catch his powerful header from Anthony’s cross.
Swansea then came close to taking the lead minutes later, as Maxime Estève kept out Swans substitute Liam Cullen’s header with a terrific goal-line clearance to keep the scores level.
Following a spell of pressure from the visitors, Parker turned to his bench with just over 20 minutes left on the clock, as Enock Agyei and Bashir Humphreys came on for Koleosho and Pires.
A triple change shortly followed, with Jay Rodriguez, Josh Laurent and Hannibal replacing Flemming, Sarmiento and Cullen, as the Clarets pushed for a goal.
The persistence and pressure paid off for the home side, as referee David Webb awarded a spot-kick deep into stoppage time for a handball, after City captain Matt Grimes handled inside the area.
Rodriguez stepped up to the spot and slammed home past Vigouroux to give the Clarets all three points at Turf Moor heading into the November international break.
