Clarets strike late to book third round spot

Oliver Sonne's stoppage time winner saw Burnley seal their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, as Scott Parker's side ran out 2-1 winners against Derby at Turf Moor.

The Clarets took the lead in the fourth minute through Aaron Ramsey's strike, with the midfielder marking his first start for the Club since February 2024 with the opening goal.

County hit back 10 minutes before the break through Bobby Clark's well-worked finish, before Sonne then struck home the winning goal in the 93rd minute.

Head Coach Parker made 11 changes from the side that defeated Sunderland on Saturday in the Premier League, handing a debut to striker Armando Broja.

Max Weiß was given his first competitive start inbetween the sticks, with Bashir Humphreys back in the XI after six months on the side-lines through injury. Joe Worrall & Lucas Pires were given their first starts of the season to form the rest of the defensive unit.

Josh Laurent partnered Ramsey in midfield, with summer signing Loum Tchaouna and Marcus Edwards taking up the wide positions and Zian Flemming in attack alongside Broja.

The Clarets controlled the opening stages of the tie and took an early lead with just four minutes on the clock, as Ramsey curled home the opener.

It started with a swift counter attack from Tchaouna, with the winger driving forward into the Derby area, before squaring it via a Flemming deflection to Broja, who worked off his man and teed up Ramsey to slot home past Josh Vickers.

There wasn’t much action after the opening goal, despite the Clarets pushing for a second and enjoying the majority of possession, it was the Rams who struck with 10 minutes left of the first-half.

It was a well-worked move, as Callum Elder played the ball into the path of Clark on the edge of the area, who nipped past Worrall and weaved into the area, before firing past the oncoming Weiß to level the score.

Parker’s men did come close to an instant response just two minutes later, but Vickers managed to keep out Flemming’s close-range header with a fine stop and ensure the two teams went into the break level.

Burnley made a half-time change prior to the second-half, as Humphreys was replaced by Axel Tuanzebe, making his Clarets debut.

The Clarets started the second 45 brightly and Tchaouna was causing plenty of problems down the left, as the winger broke into the box and fired a cross towards goal, but Broja just couldn’t quite connect.

Parker’s side were enjoying the opening few minutes and created another chance, but Worrall’s acrobatic effort sailed just over the target from inside the area.

Burnley then had another opportunity just before the hour mark, as Flemming’s free-kick was blocked but only into the path of Tchaouna, who saw his driven effort hit the outside of the post.

With the clock ticking down and half-an-hour left to play, Parker turned to his bench and introduced both Ashley Barnes and Jaydon Banel in searching of a winning goal.

Mike Tresor then replaced Flemming with just over 10 minutes left on the clock, as the hosts began to apply the pressure on the Rams.

That pressure eventually paid off in virtually the last minute of the game, as Sonne latched onto Tresor's pass and fired coolly past Vickers to ensure the Clarets' spot in the next round.
