First-half goals from Hannibal and Anthony secure deserved victory for the Clarets

Hannibal’s first goal for Burnley and Jaidon Anthony’s seventh goal of the campaign saw Scott Parker’s men claim all three points against Norwich City on Friday night.

The Clarets opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Hannibal’s well-taken effort, before Anthony then struck home the second 10 minutes later.

Norwich did claw a goal back through substitute Jack Stacey in the second-half, but a dominant display saw the home side take all three points and extend the unbeaten run to 29 matches.

Head Coach Scott Parker named just one change from Tuesday’s draw with Derby County, as Hannibal replaced Josh Laurent in midfield.

Burnley didn’t take long to get going and carved open an early chance when Anthony broke down the left and pulled it back for Zian Flemming, but the ball arrived into the area just behind the forward.

However, the opening goal was brewing after a dominant opening at Turf Moor and the Clarets got their breakthrough when Josh Cullen’s excellent dinked pass over the City defence found Hannibal, who brought it down calmly and slotted home past Angus Gunn with 15 minutes played.

It didn’t take long for the hosts to double their lead, as the dangerous looking Anthony then cut inside onto his right foot and curled the ball towards goal from the edge of the area, with a slight deflection off Shane Duffy taking it past Gunn and into the back of the net.

Norwich couldn’t get into Burnley’s half and Parker’s men were well and truly pinning the Canaries down, as the Clarets came close to adding a third goal through a Flemming strike from outside the box, before Maxime Esteve then guided over Flemming’s nod down just over the target.

The visitors did have a chance to claw a goal back against the run of play 10 minutes before the break, but the league’s top-scorer Borja Sainz could only fire wide of the goal from a one-on-one position.

A final chance of a dominant first-half then fell Hannibal’s way, but the Tunisian international’s effort struck the outside of the post, before bouncing away for a goal kick.

Burnley went into the break with a well deserved two goal advantage, limiting the Canaries to very little action across the opening 45 minutes.

Norwich did come out looking to respond after a quiet first-half, but couldn’t quite gather any momentum to spark a real attack on goal.

With the game approaching the hour mark, Burnley then forced a corner, as Hannibal’s strike from inside the box was blocked wide with the hosts pushing for a third.

Although the City attack were unable to trouble the Clarets’ defence for the majority of the game, Stacey turned home from close range to set up a nervy final few minutes within the stands.

However, as always, the formidable defence stood strong to ensure the points remained in Lancashire and secure a 24th win of the Championship season.
