The Best Bests Haiti 4-0

By Sean McCaffery, January 29, 2020

World Cup champions 2 Cups running, the USWNT struck early just :75 into the game, but then went over an hour with the next 3 facing tiny Haiti who should be very proud of their showing yesterday. The goal getters were Christen Press, assisted by Shoeless Lynn Williams who also had a tally, Lindsey Horan and Carli Lloyd of NJ & Sky Blue in extra time. This was the opening game of the qualifications for the 202o Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer. The gauntlet was thrown down in the first game by Costa Rica and their thumping of Panama 6-1, featuring a tremendous volley by their captain and a pk converted by ex-Sky Blue standout raquel Rodriguez. See video of the volley on the Facebook of Soccer Houston Magazine as well as the assist and goal from Williams to Lloyd. The 6-1 win by the Ticas has them in first by goal differential, should they lose to the USWNT, it will not make a difference. A combination of the tenacious and stout defense by Haiti and the US being rather our of sync kept it close. A lopsided 23-3 in shots and 70%  possession advantage had the US in command but not on the scoresheet for the better part of the game. An olimpico, beating the US 'keeper on the near post, a major no-no was flagged and brought back just 19' in by Roseline Eloissaint. The first half came to an end with a flurry of good looks on goal by the hometeam did little and at 59' they were back at it for the 2nd half Press looking for her 2nd strike dribbles a few player and let rip a shot causing Kerly Theus of Haiti to go low and make a top notch save. The 63' saw Williams return to the scoresheet with her goal as the ball cleared the keeper and found Williams off the corner, her leap and header were true. A corner played short then put into the area was nodded in by Linsey Horan at 73' as Theus dove in vain to keep it out of her net. Julie Ertz then set up Lloyd to close out the scoring as she fell to the turf but go the shot off. Please kep an eye on the Facebook of Soccer Houston Magazine for photos of the game.
