Atlanta United FC defeated hosts New York City FC (NYCFC), 1:0, in the first-leg of MLS Eastern Conference Semifinal on Sunday evening before a crowd of 19,198 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

This is the first time since September 5, 1971 that an Atlanta team beats a NY Club in a playoff match, when Atlanta Chiefs defeated NY Cosmos 2:0 in second-leg of NASL Semifinals at Hofstra Stadium.

No, a field goal was not missed, but 40 shots did, this was the score. In comparison, the full USMNT suffered its greatest defeat in the World Cup back in 1934 at the hands of Italy 7-1 while overall it is in 1948 when they lost to Norway, 11-0. A goal scored just less than every 7 minutes, with 55 shots is I feel, a bit excessive and a horrible ratio to boot. Although 3 subs were used, I wonder how the international soccer community will take this, in coming games should the USMNT have a game where they are not doing so well, might the opposition pour it on as a result of this.

Going in, the Crew lead this series, 32-31-11 at MAPFREE, the Crew dominate by far, 20-12-6. Looking to even it up Sunday, then taking the overall lead are the NYRB, Supporters Shield winners, most points EVER and many other accolades earned this 2018 season. Having almost twice the win total as their opponent, the 14-11-9 Crew would have one think it is quite the mismatch. See how it plays out Sunday at 3p.m. On ESPN, ESPN Deportes & NYRB Radio with Spanish coverage on TuneIn.

The USL side helped shore up the 2019 sseason with this handful of players, Aaron Guillen, Steve Miller (but not his band), Graham Smith, Alex Tambakis & DJ Taylor, following the requisite club, league and federation approval.  Each of these stalwarts logged over 2,100 in this season. More players under team option are being considered for this next season as well.

With the next game set for Nov. 3, the US U-20's have one more day to prep for this game. They took an early commanding lead with Puerto Rico, and their one lapse did cost them a goal. Luckily it did not happen in the World Cup may have been quite the fatal mistake against an Italy or France, etc. In the end it was a 7-1 result.  Some more quick information below on the team and tourney.

History of the Tourney:
